Phlox sat in his clean, white office on the other side of the planet.
He glanced out at the other high-rise buildings, squinting as the sun poked through the gaps. He hadn't heard from any of the others since landing here nearly a year ago, he sighed. They had taken refuge in the dark, seedy side of town so no one would suspect them. He often wondered what they were doing.
"Phlox, I'd like you to meet someone," Bolero said as he came into Phlox's office unannounced and proudly presented his daughter. They chatted briefly before Phlox was pulled away.
He bid them farewell with smiles and handshakes before putting on a lab coat and a sour face. He made his way down the clean halls, towards the basement of the facility.
"What is it?" he asked as he came into a small laboratory.
"They are responding well, no?" an assistant asked as they view the subjects behind the glass. Phlox's stomach turned and he asked himself again, why was he doing this? Right, to survive. he reminded himself. The standards of practicing medicine were different here. You had to harm first, watch the effects of the plagues and more before they let you treat whom they wanted you to.
He had tried to help the 'subjects,' as they were called, when he first arrived. But after a while, they had worn him down. He just didn't care anymore. He wanted to finish his training and move to another part of the city where he could open a small practice.
A smaller part of him, however, was starting to enjoy this. He could pretend the criminals brought to him were Xindi. He could do what ever he wanted to them.
They were only criminals after all.
